Editorial Standards
How this publication earns its readers' trust.
Dial & Crown is an editorial publication, not a marketing channel. These standards bind every article we publish: no article appears without a named masthead byline and verified facts.
Written by editors, signed by name
Every article carries the byline of one of our fifteen contributors. We do not publish anonymous articles, and we do not grant anonymity to sources; if a claim cannot be attributed, it does not appear. The masthead is published on the Contributors page.
No invented material
We never invent facts, quotations, interviews, auction results, prices, production details, people or events. If a fact cannot be verified, we leave it out or say plainly that it is unknown. Descriptions from manufacturers and the press are attributed to their source; a review implies hands-on time with the watch only when hands-on time actually occurred.
Verification
Factual claims are traced to named, checkable sources. Auction and market figures are reported as the houses report them, and we say which. When two credible sources disagree, we say so and explain the figure we report.
Prices, stated precisely
Every price we publish is identified by type: manufacturer list price, retailer asking price, auction estimate or auction result. A price without its type is not a fact we will print. Selection objects carry the date their details were verified.
Real photography
Every photograph on this site is a real photograph of the actual subject it shows: the watch, workshop, person or place named in its caption. We publish no illustrations standing in for real subjects, and no representative lookalikes. Where no real photograph of a subject can be secured, the story is held, not illustrated.
Independence
Editorial and advertising are separate. Access, information and technical materials do not purchase coverage, and any material commercial relationship is disclosed in the article. Paid content, when it exists, is labeled as such and never appears as editorial.
