The numbers for the first half of 2026 are now in, and they describe a market operating at a different altitude. Secondary-market transaction value reached US$10.5 billion, with US$680 million changing hands at auction, and 73 individual lots sold above US$1 million. That is the shape of the year so far: not a broad rally, but a concentrated, record-chasing top end where the rarest watches keep finding new ceilings.

Phillips set the pace. Across its Geneva, Hong Kong and New York spring sales, the house totaled more than US$235 million with 937 lots sold, a 99.8 percent sell-through rate, and nine of the ten highest-priced watches sold at auction anywhere in the world this season. The New York Watch Auction XIV, held June 13 and 14, realized US$75.8 million with every lot sold, the most successful watch auction ever held in the United States. Sixteen watches crossed the US$1 million line in a single weekend.

The Journe moment

The New York sale's crown jewel was the F. P. Journe Chronometre a Resonance "Souscription, No. 007", one of only 20 early Souscription models made for founding clients, and one of two known in platinum and pink gold with a pink-gold dial. After a nine-minute bidding war it sold for US$13,922,000, a world auction record for any independent watchmaker and the most expensive 21st-century watch ever sold at auction. It was the culmination of a run that began the previous December, when a comparable Souscription No. 2 sold for CHF 3.33 million in Geneva and Francis Ford Coppola's unique FFC Prototype reached US$10.7 million in New York. The market has stopped pricing early Journe as watches and started pricing them as authorship.

Patek holds the floor

Patek Philippe supplied the blue-chip ballast. In New York, the white-gold ref. 5004G-020 perpetual calendar split-seconds chronograph once owned by Eric Clapton sold for US$5,202,000, while a 1948 pink-gold ref. 1518 reached US$3,992,000. In Hong Kong, a pink-gold First Series ref. 2499 sold for US$10.2 million, the highest price ever paid for a timepiece in Asia, inside a HK$403.8 million sale that set the Asian record for a watch auction. Geneva's own record book got a 2025 entry too, when a steel ref. 1518 sold for CHF 14,190,000 that November.

The shape of demand

The records were not confined to Patek. Sotheby's Important Watches sale in Hong Kong totaled HK$414.2 million, a house record, led by the circa-1987 yellow-gold Cartier London Crash at HK$15,616,000. In Geneva on May 10, a 1967 yellow-gold Rolex Daytona ref. 6239 with a Paul Newman dial, untouched in a drawer for 45 years, set a world record for the reference at CHF 1,143,000. The lots that broke records shared the same traits: rarity, originality and a story no other watch can tell.

What it means

Two structural shifts sit behind the figures. The buyer base keeps getting younger and broader: around a third of Phillips registrants this spring were under 40, and nearly a third were new to the house. And the hierarchy of value keeps tilting from brand prestige toward the single author, whether that is a Journe Souscription, a London Crash or a one-family Daytona. After the correction of 2022 cleared out the fast money, what remains is a market that pays for provenance, hand-finishing and scarcity. The second half of 2026, with Geneva's autumn sales still to come, will test how much higher that logic can climb.
